Lot 372		An Impressive Collection of over 200 Vintage Post Cards of US Bridges and Dams 1900s -1960s. Post card collectors would be hard pressed to find as nicely selected and archived vintage post card collection of historic bridges, dams, tunnels and even a few skyscrapers of the US. We note a wonderful post card of the Brooklyn Bridge from 1905 a Washington Bridge from 1905 a Des Moines River Bridge card from 1906 just to name a few the earliest pieces. But what impresses is the number of bridges represented from virtually every state in the nation. Also included are nine photo panoramaic post cards all from the St. John's Bridge in Portland which are very impressive. Dams include 12 of Hoover from the 50s and 60s, three of Shasta and several other famous dams. Finally some New York skyscrapers including a souvenir folder from the 1931 with 17 buildings and the Statue of Liberty. Overall in very good to fine condition, many of the postcards stamped and inscribed but again, nice condition. Very nice archive of better ephemera from Expositions and World Fairs with official souvenir programs, official publications and assorted ephemera including opening day invitations, stickers, menus and the like. Collection begins with the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1892, Lewis & Clark 1905, Jamestown 1907, Alaska-Yukon-Pacific 1909, both New York Worlds Fairs in 1939 and 1964/65, Texas Centennial 1936, Hudson--Fulton 1909 and ends with the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. Lot 376		Rare 18th Century Silk Embroidered Sampler, Fantastic Images. Samplers on silk are rare and highly collectible. Offered here is one with scenes of new world discoveries. Birds, trees flowers populate scenes that intrigue; a farmer tending a goad, a woman with a basket of flowers and walking staff, a ship in the distance on a calm ocean, and most compelling, a baboon with a waist belt tied to a block or wood box in the distance a tropical setting of palm trees and a two-story building. Examined in frame (15 x 22½ and old), sampler measures 12½ x 19½ and has some slight fabric stressing in top center about 3½ in length that runs through tail of bird. Otherwise, while toned very little staining and the scenes clearly visible, the threads muted over the years. Needlepoint samplers on silk are rare and can command thousands of dollars. Lot 377		Rare English Needlepoint Sampler, Dated 1675, Adam & Eve Scene. 17th Century English needlepoint band sampler on linen. Measuring 11 x 37 sampler was once framed but carefully removed due to ceiling water damage years past non-acid free mounting. While the sampler did get stained, after removal it was discovered the fabric remains quite supple and only has small areas of stress and about three tiny holes. Dated 1675, the sampler boast lovely needlework. Scenes include Adam, Eve and the Serpent wrapped around the Tree Of Life and a small scene of The Crucifixion at one end, with the rest exhibiting ornate floral patterns, trees and birds. Samplers of this age can command thousands of dollars in upscale antique galleries. A qualified, professional cleaner of vintage fabrics should be able to mitigate some of the staining and restore to a degree this significant antique collectible. Lot 378		18 Sequential Vintage Playboy Magazines From Their First & Second Years June 1954 - Dec. 1955. One of the landmark cultural touchstones in American pop-culture history, Playboy Magazine made publisher Hugh Hefner a household name, it ushered in the "sexual revolution" and of course led the fore in amazing interviews, excerpts of novels, editorials and featured articles. These issues are incredible look back to the 1950s are in overall very good to fine condition. Some of covers have surface rub but otherwise quite nice. These are from the archive of a photographer employed by the magazine in the first two years of publication. Collection is 18 issues beginning with the June 1954 edition and ending with the December 1955 edition. Collection includes the First Anniversary Issue, December, 1954. All in individual sleeves. Lot 379		2 Unique Mid-19th Century Gentleman's Walking Canes, Both Discretely Containing Personal Accessories. Two unique walking canes. The first an English Officer's Campaign Cane, c. 1860. 35� in. Malacca wood shaft, with sterling silver top when unscrewed contains a shaving brush and straight shaving razor with a translucent tortoise handle; the razor is signed by the maker, A.E. Aldrid Wigan. Minor dings to the silver handle otherwise fine. The second an Indo-Chinese c. 1850. 34½ in. beautifully embossed silver top on Malacca shaft. Lot 380		Beautifully Archived Vintage Collection of Crate and Can Labels of the 20th Century 300+. 3 Volumes each with almost a hundred sleeves of near pristine fruit, vegetable and can labels (some have multiples) beginning in the early 20th Century. Most are near pristine, a 30 year collection by a very intrepid collector whose passion in collecting is clearly evident. Many of these lithos boast stunning imagery and colors (some labels are embossed and with gold inks, virtually all small masterpieces) with just about all suitable for framing, most especially the crate labels. Lot 381		Collection of Four Handsome Antique Gentleman's Walking Canes. Four antique walking canes from the 19th and 20th centuries all distinguished by their attractive horn and mixed metal handles. Ranging from 34 to 38 inches in length one is a natural African walking stick with horn handle, the other three are bone or horn handled with and silver banded collars and hardwood shafts indicative of the elegance of times past. The longer bone handled cane has a sterling silver chased collar with a floral motif and initialed A. Turner, 1906. All fine with one cane missing it brass tip. Lot 383		Spectacular Vintage Collection of Crate and Can Labels of the 20th Century Boasting Beautiful Art 250+. 2 Volumes each of 70 sleeves of near pristine fruit and vegetable crate labels (some cans) beginning in the early 20th Century. Most are near pristine, many have multiple copies, a 30 year collection by a very intrepid collector whose passion in collecting is clearly evident. Lot 384		Two Large 19th Century Hand Hammered Copper Cooking Vessels. Two large and very heavy 19th century hand hammered copper cooking vessels. These two pieces are absolutely magnificent and their exteriors in excellent condition. The large single handled pot stands 10 inches tall and nine inches in diameter at the base. Outstanding craftsmanship especially the "dove tailed" seamwork along the side burnished perfectly; no uneven edges to the touch. Interior appears to be tin and has accumulated some lime residue at bottom. The other lidded pot stands 8" tall, and 9 inches in diameter at base. It too is lined in tin but has a great deal of lime along sides and base is covered with something seriously baked on. Underneath pot, heavily blackened from use. Lot 385		Rare Late 19th Century Bontems Tortoise Shell Gold and Gilt Silver Singing Bird Box. Beautiful 1890s Bontems gold and gilt silver singing bird box. Encased in tortoise shell, this is not a music box, but a highly crafted automaton that when wound, bird arises from the decorated gilt gold lid and begins chirping in the sweetest of tones. The bird itself is in excellent, itself a marvel of craftsmanship dressed with iridescent hummingbird feathers. Tortoise shell box has almost no evidence of handling, original key hides in a compartment at rear of box. Winds from the bottom 1¼ x 4 x 2¾". Automaton works beautifully and the bird sound, incredible. However box could use some minor regulating as the bird need careful help retreating into the box and the wings flap slowly. Otherwise remarkable given its 125+ years. These pieces were very expensive in their day and are highly prized and treasured today. Lot 386		Exceptional and Rare Stoehr Copper Kettle (1820s) and Reference Book. Stamped "D.Stoehr." (1787-1863) active circa 1821, West Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania, 1820-1830. The circular domed lid fitting to conforming sloping shoulders above a tapering cylindrical body, with serpentine spout and applied C-scroll handle, the handle stamped "D. STOEHR." Minor dents, evidence of more than a century of use. Height: 6¾". Height with handle upright: 11¾". Diameter at base: 7¼". Very fine condition. Conveying with this highly collectible antique teakettle is a history of similar items, American Copper & Brass, by Henry Kauffman (1968). Lot 387		Outstanding Biedermeier Box of Walnut and Burl ca. 1820-1830, Germany. Biedermeier was an influential German style of furniture design that evolved during the years 1815�1848 in Central Europe resulting in some of the most beautiful furnishings and accessories of the 19th Century. Throughout the period, emphasis was kept upon clean lines and minimal ornamentation consistent with Biedermeier's basis in utilitarian principles. Offered here is an exquisite example wood box from that period. Excellent craftsmanship of burl and walnut. Hinges and lock in very good shape and remarkably, original key present. Atop lid set flush is an oval shaped pastoral scene painted on paper and placed under glass. Glass may have at one point been replaced. Otherwise box is in very fine condition given its years. Lot 388		Six (6) 19th Century Pewter Pieces; 3 Quart Measures and 3 Pint Measures. Very fine collection of pewter quart and pint measures most, not all, American makers. Two of the three quart measures have a number of marks. The shortest quart measure is touchmarked "City of Manr" in a tiny circle. the covered quart measure is considered to be American given the shape of the thumb piece and the third piece is unmarked save for a clearly stamped letter " A" near top of lip. The three pint measure all boast different designs, two with numerous marks with one also dated 1893. All the pieces show use, with some minor dents. Lot 390		3 Rare Late 19th Century Russian Boxes One Birch Wood with Imperial Coat of Arms and 2 Tortoise Shell. Three antique boxes from Russia all late 19th century pieces. First a birch box ca. 1900 quite well handmade with the Russian Imperial Coat of Arms on lid in gilt medal and enamel. 6¾ x 3¾ x 2¾" and remains in very good condition. Also included are two round tortoise shell boxes, one likely a lady's powder box with petite painted stripes over tortoise shell and a lovely hand painted miniature of four beautiful children ca. 1890s. Wear to sides from use, but lid with miniature remains quite beautiful and measures 3 x 3 x 1¼". Finally a small round tortoise shell box with a Russian medal inset dated 1849 also with the Russian Imperial Coat of Arms which was used until 1917. (Israel Trask, Beverly, Massachusetts, 1807-1856) Thin pewter with a flared base and four relief rings near the bottom. An engraved band just above the area where the spout meets the side. Lot 392		Collection of 19th Century Pewter; 7 Poringers, 6 Spoons, An Excellent Oil Lamp & 5-Quill Ink Well. Nice collection of fifteen, 19th century pewter pieces: 7 poringers of different sizes, 1¾ x 5½" being the largest and to 1 x 3½" the smallest, all with a variety of handles, one crown, the balance all types of scrolls one very simple with a hole for hanging, and six spoons all the same style and 8" in length and while exhibiting heavy use have enormous visual appeal. Also a wonderful oil lamp with the touchmark "R. Gleason" and finally a large 5-quill inkwell, no touchmark visible, but great weight and in nice condition. Lot 395		Large 19th Century Pewter Coffee Pot, Pennsylvania. A very large pewter coffee pot from the 19th Century. There are no mark on the base save for a small "58" and a sticker from an antiques dealer that is very rubbed, "1840 Pennsylvania". What we can say is this the largest piece of pewter in the collection. Pot is 13½" tall and base is 7½" in diameter with the exterior in great condition, and the base of handle ending in a heart shaped accent. Likely there was a repair to the bottom of base for the pewter has an odd crescent shaped discoloration (the base is sand filled) but none of this shows when displayed. Lot 396		Two 19th Century Pewter Coffee Pots Unsusual Size and Make. Two antique pewter coffee pots. The taller has an usual design, most especially the spout. Touchmark on base hard to read but we note "Warranted" and the last few letters "INGE". 10½ tall again an unusual spout with some evidence of rust inside. Displays beautifully. The other is a squat pot, unmarked with a wood handle. Stands 7¾" tall. Handle is complete but is cracked near bottom nevertheless displays nicely. Lot 397		Large, Majestic Carved Rose Quartz Urn of Phoenix and Magpies. Beautiful, large carved rose quartz urn in high relief. A spectacular sculptural piece with two magpies and elaborately carved peonies that form the lid, and an elegantly carved mythical phoenix standing amongst an explosion of exquisitely carved peonies that surround and form the urn. A truly grand piece, actual urn measures 26½ x 17 x 10" which rests on a custom wood base that adds 4½" in height. In superior condition. Lot 398		Striking 19th Century Bronze Bust of Homer. Legendary blind bard responsible for the Iliad and Odyssey, the 8th century B.C. epic poems regarded by many as the earliest examples of Western literature. Goldberg Auctions is proud to offer this remarkable 19th century bronze bust of Homer, carefully modeled after the established Hellenistic portrait type notable for its careful attention to the slackened treatment of the muscles around the unseeing eyes and the long, luxuriant curls of the beard, much like those seen in contemporary depictions leading Greek philosophers. A moving representation of this truly foundational figure in the history of Western Civilization. Beautifully cast, unsigned and burnished to a dark patina, bronze bust sits on a base of honey/gold onyx and stands including the base 21 x 13 1/2 x 8" where top of based has been carved to create a plinth for the mounting. The sculpture with base is about 48 pounds. Faded gallery sticker at rear of base still present with $7,500.00 price, purchased in Beverly Hills in the 1970s. Lot 399		Bronze Empire Mantle Clock. By Paor Sculptures in Spain, comes this contemporary, Empire styled, large mantle clock of patinated bronze. Boasting excellent detail and craftsmanship this clock measures 23½ x 12½" x 8½. and is absolutely stunning in conveying the aristry of the decorative mid 19th century Empire style that celebrated the opulence and richness based on Greek and Roman splendor. Classic regal female resting, perhaps tipping a container of water which sits securely on a separate but matching bronze pedestal, with panels of chariot racing in relief surrounding. Lot 402		2 Late Caddo Period Bowls (In The Style Of). Two very handsome bowls tagged and previously identified as Late Caddo Period from the Ouachita River basin area of South East Texas / Louisiana. Without more advanced dating tests conducted, consider these pieces to be "in the style of the Late Caddo Period" nevertheless both apparently late 18th century. Not in dispute is how striking and beautiful both pieces remain. The squat vessel is 3¼ x 6 x 6" and the other measures 4½ x 6 x 6". We welcome interested bidders to view in person.
